The Island of Guernsey |

![]() |
The
Bailiwick of Guernsey is a group of islands within the Channel Islands,
located in the English Channel between England and France. Guernsey is
24 square miles in area with a population of just over 60,000.
The capital, St Peter Port incorporates the main shopping and banking areas, as well as a cosmopolitan variety of restaurants and bars. There are excellent sporting facilities on the island. The
islands have historic links with the UK, but over 700 years of independence
and self-government has given Guernsey a culture and character that
is quite unique. The climate is milder, with over 2,000 hours of sunshine
every year and the island boasts some of the cleanest beaches in the
UK. |

The Education Department is responsible for the administration of all Primary, Secondary and Special Needs Schools and the co-educational Grammar School and the College of Further Education, totalling 27 educational establishments. The Education Department operates a selection process for Secondary Education (11+) which takes place during the last year in primary school. There is currently a major reorganisation of special needs education on the island and there is also a reorganisation of secondary education. This will involve the building of several new schools for both special needs and secondary age pupils. The first of these new schools will be opened in September 2005. At age 16 all pupils are offered the opportunity to pursue AS and A2 Level courses at The Grammar School or vocational courses at the College of Further Education. Guernsey
